Justin hears a message, which alludes to Brianfs recent surgery, from a doctor Rabinowitz on Brianfs answering machine. After contacting the hospital to learn more about the doctor, Justin asks Michael if he knows anything about Brian having cancer. Clearly, Brian does not want anyone to know about his condition, and Michael thinks that he and Justin should respect his wish. But, while visiting Brian at the loft, Michael starts to cry, and he confesses that he and Justin know about Brianfs cancer. Later, angry at Justin for spreading the news, Brian throws him out of the loft.
Benfs ongoing negativity regarding Michael and Justinfs comic book becoming a live-action feature film precipitates an argument in which Michael accuses Ben of being jealous. Michael storms out of their apartment and stays at Tedfs place for the night. When Brian and Justin finally meet the filmfs prospective director, Brett Keller, he guarantees that he will not change anything about Rage, especially the superherofs sexual orientation. With their fears and concerns assuaged, Justin and Michael agree to let Keller option the film rights to their comic book creation.
Meanwhile, a regretful Debbie wants to spend more than $27,000, money she really doesnft have, on a massive monument to mark Vicfs grave. She refuses to listen to advice from anyone about buying a more modest headstone, and she works herself into a state of nervous collapse at the diner. Emmett appeals to Detective Carl Horvath to have a talk with Debbie. The detective tells her about his failure to be with his wife at the moment of her death, despite his vow to her that he would not let her die alone. He experienced the same guilt that Debbie is now suffering, but eventually came to realize that his wife would forgive him for what had happened, as Vic would forgive Debbie.
When artist Sam Auerbach comes to dinner at Melanie and Lindsayfs house, he looks at Lindsayfs paintings, which are unimpressive. But Lindsayfs sketch of a homeless man prompts Sam to encourage her to start drawing again. Later, at the gallery, he takes off all his clothes to serve as her model.
